Painted Bookcases

Happy Tuesday!

I absolutely Love Tuesdays, they are my most relaxing day of the week and  a great day to catch up on a project. It is my one day alone with my little girl since my son, Anthony, attends preschool twice a week Tuesday and Fridays. Friday’s I’m at work so Tuesday’s is the only day I get to have one child at home which makes the day easier.  Today I managed to paint more of our deck which has been a very slow going process. Not a “fun” project, but one that needs to be done. Since that has been occupying my time the last week I have yet to post a finished project, so I thought I would back track a little and show my before and after of my set of painted bookcases.

This was the very first project I had completed for my Living Room Makeover. Another great find on craigslist that just needed some TLC. My original plan for this room was to do a DIY built-in using Ikea bookcases, but once I spotted this pair on craigslist, that was more affordable, my plans changed!

My inspiration was Ballard Design or even a great piece that could have come from Restoration Hardware. Love both these stores and I feel my decorating has really been combining all these looks with my own touch and of course a much smaller budget.

I spent $75 on the set…
Another $60 on ASCP…
$12 on new hardware…
And about 3 days making these over.

I painted the bookcase with Old white from Annie Sloan and painted the details with French Linen. The back of the bookcase I chose Dragon’s Breath from Benjamin Moore since I had used it on my hallway doors and the board and batten in my Dining Room. I wanted to use a touch of this color in each room to keep a great design flow.

Here is the Before:

We had planned to put the bookcases around the TV stand originally but I ended up putting them together and liking how that turned out.
And the After:

The styling for the bookcase was combining new and old pieces as well as keeping the color scheme soft and muted. Having the dark background I wanted to use decor that would pop against this. I also covered flashy colored books with craft paper to keep a cohesive look.
This bookcase has become such a statement piece, especially since it is one of the first pieces you see when entering our house. I will probably switch up the decor here and there which makes it fun to decorate with.
Since my little one did not make it into this photo shoot this time around, I thought I would show some of her playing around in our Kitchen Sink this morning.
