Annie Sloan LIttle Girl Dresser Makeover

It has been quite busy  over here lately and I feel we have multiple unfinished project that have been impossible to finish and post about. I have definitely diagnosed myself with designer/DIY A.D.D!
One project that  has been a concentration of mine has been to finish both kids bed rooms. These were the first two projects we took on when moving into our house, making sure both their rooms were painted before moving any furniture in. The night of our closing Dan and I hurried over here with our buckets of paint, no ladder, no painters tape, and one brush and roller to get this done.
After moving in a few short days later we could not control the projects and went from one to the next going to sleep at 4:30 in the morning some days. Nine months later  the two rooms took the back burner and have remained just about the same as they were the first week we moved in.

Well this will not be for long…the rooms are being finished and the finishing touches are finally happening. I thought before I go right in and post an entire room, I might as well present the dresser and nightstand I refinished for Gemma’s room.

I was in search last August for a french provincial type dresser. I wanted to really go for that extreme girly vibe, in here since this will probably be the last time I have full say in her room decor before she gets her own inspiration from some cartoon or friends bedroom. I came across this set on Craigslist (of course) and it was not a bad price at $100 for the pair. It was not in the best condition, but with a little paint, sand, and wax I knew this would be a beautiful piece.

The before of course was not taken, but I have seen this dresser set so many times on the web and other craigslist adds that I thought I would just post one that looks just like it. I believe it was a set from Sears in the 70’s that  I am sure so many young girls growing up then must have had  in their room.

I do wish the tall dresser was included in this purchase but then again once she gets a little older I am sure we will be more eclectic in here.

The refinishing began…

I used Annie Sloan White Chalk Paint and Antoinette for the trim. I kept the hardware as is and just brushed a slight amount of the Antoinette color on the knobs only. I really wanted an antique feel for this collection so I went all out with the Dark and Clear Wax.

  1. i have a dresser identical to this one we’re considering using in my granddaughter’s bedroom soon….i’m worried that paint won’t adhere to the slick finish on top. did you have a problem with that? i really don’t want to invest in ASCP for just one piece of 2nd hand furniture and was hoping to make my own using some formulas i’ve seen on other blogs that work for them. any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks!

    1. Hi Judy,

I used ASCP on this project and it worked out great! I can understand the hesitation when purchasing this paint for one project since it tends to be pretty pricey. The one benefit of Annie Sloan, besides its no prep aspect, is that it spreads really well and one can lasts for a while. I was able to use the same can for multiple projects afterwards. I am sure creating your own product would be just as great. I have read multiple posts about DIY Chalk Paint and it sounds like it works just about the same. If you are willing to test out latex paint too and use a poly over it that may work too. I have used latex paint on some of my ikea pieces and used a poly over it to limit the scratches and scuffs. Let me know how your project works out! It really turns out to be a cute piece for a little girls room.

  2. Awww I love it! I JUST found a French dresser on Craigslist for $50. Can’t wait to do the same thing to that one for my daughter’s room. Yours turned out great!

  3. Visiting from Beyond the Picket Fence….I have been dying to try Antionette, but unfortunately my house is filled with men! I’m hoping to get a custom order one day for a little girls room so I can live vicariously (or maybe my cat, Cookie, is on the lookout for a special piece that she hasn’t told me about!)

  4. This is just like the set my sister and I shared – when I was very young, oh so many years ago – love your transformation – gotta love Anne Sloan Chalk Paint!
I hope you have a great day,
    Kathy

  5. I have this exact dresser and am using it in my son’s room for now…and I keep going back and forth about refinishing it…If I did it, I’d need to go with a robin’s egg blue in there somewhere, ’cause that’s my color…

  6. Thank you for sharing this post at City of Creative Dream’s City of Links on Friday! I appreciate you taking the time to party with me. Hope to see you again today 🙂

  7. YES; It must be a very popular set back in the day. I have the entire set, tall dresser, long dresser and 2 end tables. I have re-done them 3 times now. But being that I got them from my grandmother and I was already an adult, I took off the added pieces and the hardware and did not put any on. I first did them in a high gloss black…but boy did that show the dust but looked very classy Then I did them in a hammered metallic silver and it looked awesome. Now I have done it in a aluminum colour. Loving it too. For a little girl…your DIY is beautiful. Makes me wish I would have gotten the set from my grandmother when I was much younger than I was. Great projects….enjoyed viewing your website.
