I have been addicted to window shopping this Christmas Season. I have been very careful not to over shop, yet still manage to buy or make or reuse what I have to create a beautiful Christmas Home. One of the hard ones to steer away from are all the adorable Christmas pillows they have out there. I mean so easy to be drawn into what Homegoods has or TJmaxx or even Target (who is killing it this year). So, while browsing the other day I fell hard for these adorable plaid pillows that homegoods had. I mean adorable! They had the blue and green plaid and then a fur trim. I can’t even tell you how close I was to throwing them in my cart but then with the price tag of $30 each I had to step away. I just can’t be dropping $60 on pillows that I know will only be on my bed for a month. Same thing that happened to me in the fall when I decided to try out my Pottery Barn Knock off Pillow. Sometimes its great to splurge and buy what you love and of course it may be more worth it to spend the money on the product then the supplies…but in this case, I knew I could figure a way around this and create something that I would love for much cheaper. So being a DIYer I decided I could give this a try myself…and create an easy plaid Christmas Pillowcase.
Did I mention I don’t sew? I mean I can hand stitch…but sewing on a machine is just not possible for me. I don’t have a sewing machine to start with, but the patience to figure it out and then not mess up I just won’t go there. So it was either I got some adhesive tape (that may very well fall apart) or hand stitch this baby. Yep, that’s the route I took!
I first stopped over at Hobby Lobby to browse for a similar plaid print that would work in my room. They did not quite have the exact plaid style I was going for (I was hoping to find a large pattern), but they did have one that was a fleece material and had the blue green combo that I wanted. I bought 2 yards just to be on the safe side in case I messed up and headed home to try my sewing skills out.
First step was to take the pillowcase off of the pillow I had at home and trace that for an accurate size. If you don’t have a pillowcase and have to trace a pillow give yourself a little more room to trace. I traced the pillowcase and cut about 1-.5″ past the pillowcase (since this will be the inside and you need space for flipping pillow inside out).
Once the fabric is cut then begin to sew together. If you can use a machine even better…but for this girl I chose hand stitch and sat and watched a Hallmark Christmas movie which helped the time go by. It was actually quite relaxing something I have not done in a really long time. Once the pillowcase is fully sewn, cut a slit down center and flip inside out. And there the pillowcase step is done. Slip over the pillow of your choice (this can absolutely be a square pillow as well) and be ready to create your Ho Ho letters.
Use a stencil or print out a DIY stencil online to help create your letters. I traced mine over white felt.
Once cut you can apply with hot glue to center of pillow.
And then you got yourself a really cute pair of pillows that are unique!
I have yet to see Ho Ho style pillows I kind of stole the idea of the Ho Ho monogram from a PB kids catalog where they had the letters on a plaid print wall.
Really cute and festive yet, wayy cheaper then $60 that will give you better sleep at night knowing you saved a bit on making these yourself.
I love how the blue and green compliment the colors in this room.
Psst…If I can sew this together so can you! My hubby and I were both shocked I actually pulled this off.
Love it if you can share with your friends!

Impressed the heck out of me that you hand sewed that pillow Deb! I’m totally with you about not being able to justify spending $60.00 on holiday pillows. Kudos to the DIYer in you who says I can make one for myself for a fraction of the price! Pinned to share.

Thanks Marie! I impressed myself lol. I seriously thought this was going to be one of those disaster projects that I wasted money on at the store and then end up not sharing. I feel like I need to do this seasonally now since it saved me so much money.
I love these!!! They would look so great on my moms leather sofa during the holidays ?
Thank you for sharing
oh awesome! Love to see how they turn out, send me a photo!
