Sometimes doing a project for others is the kind that you love doing the most!
I had a blast refinishing this table that I found on the side of the road awaiting its destiny with Mr. Garbage Man.
It could not have been sitting on that curb at a better time then the exact day my friend Erin called me up to tell me she needs help furnishing her apartment since her sister would be moving out and taking most of the furniture. I told her it would totally be possible on a way low budget and that I would keep my eyes peeled for deals/steals/ and of course free stuff. A few hours later my text was sent with “I found the table”!
Well I am sure you are wondering what this table looked like if it’s previous owners thought it belonged in the trash and what it looks like now…

I know what you’re thinking…”omg those legs!” haha
So it is still sitting in my garage in this photo, but I could not wait to post this one.
What did I do?
#1 thing was to give this baby a good sand and cleaning. I used acetone and other stripper solution to get rid of the stain and finish. It had some markings from what I’m assuming are paint cans (probably used in the garage for storage) and were impossible to get out, so I made sure to really clean it the best I could before the paint would go on.
Let’s talk about those legs… I used a combination of Martha Stewart’s mint colored chalkboard paint mixed with white primer. The combination of the two helped to lighten the color as well as keep the paint less “chalkboard” like, but still kept the flat finish. You can find Martha Stewart paints at Michaels for under $10.
After two quick coats on all the legs, I started to paint the the top with the same white primer. I really would have loved to use some Annie Sloan chalk paint on them, but since we were on a strict budget for this project I just used what I had. and since it was flat I knew it would still look great for that shabby chic look I was trying to accomplish. This took some time since there were the existing stains to cover so I gave this table top about 6 coats in some areas. pheew!
Adding those stripes were not necessarily the initial plan. I decided to use them to cover some areas that were still not covering well with the white. Good o’l frog tape helped me out with this, and some Annie Sloan french linen. 15 mins later I peeled the tape off and gave it a white dry brush over it to not make it so modern.
And last was to seal it with Annie Sloan clear wax and surprise Erin with this fabulous table and of course it was Love at first site!
What a fun and inexpensive project with so much pay off to help a friend out. She of course is a single lady still and having this super feminine piece is going to suit her apartment just right!
