Super Easy Industrial Style Fan Makeover

Super Easy Industrial Style Fan Makeover

Since we are planning for this party this weekend, the hubby and I have been doing all types of little projects around the house. It will be the first party we are hosting here since moving in so we will have company that has yet to see our home or have yet to see it since more changes have been done. Since I am OCD about everything looking “perfect” I am trying to tie up all those details that I have been dying to do for months and now have a reason too. One of the projects we decided to take on, is this Super Easy Industrial Style Fan Makeover. It’s as simple as can be, with a little help from some paint. Cause you know, paint solves everything!
Super Easy Industrial Style Fan Makeover

The fan started out as the below photo, a very outdated 1980’s oak, and brass ceiling fan. I posted a reveal about two weeks ago of this room (click here to view) family room reveal and I avoided taking any photos with that hideous fixture. You can see the fan in the before photo and how well it fits into the style of the home prior to our changes. Yea everything was basically oak, brass, and  1985!

We, of course, were on a budget once again and wanted an instant upgrade without dropping money on a new fan. I thought well…we have painted everything else in this house why not try to paint this too! I wanted the style to be very industrial vintage and I thought adding Edison bulbs would be perfect.

Here is what the fan looked like before:

DIY Industrial Fan Materials:

3 Vintage Style Edison Bulbs
Cotton Balls: To protect the light bulb sockets from spray paint.

Tutorial:

Remove ceiling fan from the ceiling. Add cotton balls into sockets to protect the inside. Spray paint with flat black spray paint. Let Dry! Hang back up and add some Edison Bulbs. That simple!

    1. Thanks so much! Yea I have to say this one I did not search for at all…there could be a chance that someone else has done the same thing but it was so easy to do! I figured if it looked bad it could not be worse than what was already there : ) So glad you stopped by!

  1. This is beautiful. I am assuming you took the whole fan down to paint (or you would be one brave woman). If so, how hard is it to remove and reattach after painting?

    1. Yes, the hubs took down the fan piece by piece and I spray painted the entire surface black including the screws. It was fairly easy for him to disassemble and put together again.

  2. Yes, please comment on how you painted it. I am ready to paint my fan white and the only part I am not certain about is the paper filter over the motor. Looks like you sprayed over that too?

    1. Hi grace..I disassembled the fan and sprayed the whole thing down. I had a mesh type filter inside of my fan and only spray painted the outside so it really was not affected. All the best on your project!

  3. Wow! What an amazing difference. I’ll never shop for new fans again except for at the thrift store to redo them like yours! And I’m curious: how is the light that the bare edison bulbs cast? Do you like it okay?

    1. Hi Suzanne thanks for your comment! I have to say it is not as bright as I thought the edison bulbs were going to be which I was actually relieved about, but it does come off a little on the yellow side. Luckily for us we rarely use our ceiling fan for light since this room is so bright during the day and at night we have a table lamp that we usually have on. Not sure if there are edison bulbs out there that have a clear glass which would give off less of a yellow tint. Thanks for the questions and comment glad you stopped by!

    1. Thanks Michelle! I knew this one was gonna be a dramatic difference just with a little spray paint. Black spray paint can make a difference on anything! This is the second light fixture in my house I spray painted black for an instant upgrade…since it is saves us from purchasing a new one for a few years.

  4. So glad I found this. I’m redoing my son’s room (who married and moved out last year!), making it a cozy guest room. Ironically, we have that same hideous fan in that room! Haha! Exactly the same! So I’ll just follow your instruction and I should get the same results. Thanks!

  5. Wow! What a difference… can hardly believe it’s the same ceiling fan!! Way to go Deb! xo

  6. Hello! Really great before and after. I’ve always wanted to do this but was afraid it would be very time consuming… But I do wonder: two years later, how are you finding the upkeep?I love the black colour but I need to dust my fan fairly often but I’m afraid the mat paint is hard to dust!

    1. Hi Patricia, So the paint looks great 2 years later, but def with mat paint it is much harder to dust. You can get the same look with a different finish so it works better for your up keep.

    1. Thank you so much Renee! Honestly, it made such a difference in our family room, and we’ve had it like this for about 2.5 years now…and I’m still not tempted to buy a new one.

  7. I love your idea. I’m getting ready to paint mine today. I’ve ordered the bulbs from amazon, should arrive tomorrow. Super excited!

    1. That’s awesome Lisa, so excited to hear! I sprayed my fan about 3 years ago and it’s still looking great! good luck!

  8. Love love love your blog! Can’t wait to try this out for my 12 year old son’s tween vintage industrial bedroom makeover!
