Super Easy Industrial Style Fan Makeover
The fan started out as the below photo, a very outdated 1980’s oak, and brass ceiling fan. I posted a reveal about two weeks ago of this room (click here to view) family room reveal and I avoided taking any photos with that hideous fixture. You can see the fan in the before photo and how well it fits into the style of the home prior to our changes. Yea everything was basically oak, brass, and  1985!
We, of course, were on a budget once again and wanted an instant upgrade without dropping money on a new fan. I thought well…we have painted everything else in this house why not try to paint this too! I wanted the style to be very industrial vintage and I thought adding Edison bulbs would be perfect.
Here is what the fan looked like before:
DIY Industrial Fan Materials:
Tutorial:
Remove ceiling fan from the ceiling. Add cotton balls into sockets to protect the inside. Spray paint with flat black spray paint. Let Dry! Hang back up and add some Edison Bulbs. That simple!
Have a wonderful week and weekend friends!

Thanks so much! Yea I have to say this one I did not search for at all…there could be a chance that someone else has done the same thing but it was so easy to do! I figured if it looked bad it could not be worse than what was already there : ) So glad you stopped by!
The before and after has a big dramatic difference. You totally killed this DIY. Nice job.

Thank you so much ambika!
I’ve been looking to update a couple 90’s fans we have and I love how yours turned out. I never thought of using the Edison bulbs! I will be pinning this for sure!
So glad you stopped by Jill! the edison bulbs are such an easy upgrade…hope to see how your fans turn out.
This is beautiful. I am assuming you took the whole fan down to paint (or you would be one brave woman). If so, how hard is it to remove and reattach after painting?
Yes, the hubs took down the fan piece by piece and I spray painted the entire surface black including the screws. It was fairly easy for him to disassemble and put together again.
Yes, please comment on how you painted it. I am ready to paint my fan white and the only part I am not certain about is the paper filter over the motor. Looks like you sprayed over that too?
Hi grace..I disassembled the fan and sprayed the whole thing down. I had a mesh type filter inside of my fan and only spray painted the outside so it really was not affected. All the best on your project!
That is awesome! What a great idea! I love the industrial look, you did a great job!
Thanks for your sweet comment Melanie!
That looks amazingly good for such a simple change! Amazed!
Thanks for your sweet comment Alysa! So easy and such a difference : )
I love the look of those bulbs so much! Thanks for sharing. Hello from Flaunt it Friday!
Thanks so much Melissa!
OMG! I have the same type of hideous ceiling fan but didn’t want to pay $$$ for a new one. I am going to do this over the long weekend!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!
So glad I inspired you! Hope to see how your fan turns out!
What an awesome makeover! I love the new look of your fan. Thanks for sharing at the Thursday S.T.Y.L.E. Link Party!
Wow! What an amazing difference. I’ll never shop for new fans again except for at the thrift store to redo them like yours! And I’m curious: how is the light that the bare edison bulbs cast? Do you like it okay?
Hi Suzanne thanks for your comment! I have to say it is not as bright as I thought the edison bulbs were going to be which I was actually relieved about, but it does come off a little on the yellow side. Luckily for us we rarely use our ceiling fan for light since this room is so bright during the day and at night we have a table lamp that we usually have on. Not sure if there are edison bulbs out there that have a clear glass which would give off less of a yellow tint. Thanks for the questions and comment glad you stopped by!
What a great idea! I love it!
Way cool makeover!! Love this one!
Stopping in to pin, this looks fantastic, no pun originally intended, but I guess it IS fan-tastic!
thanks so much! that is so cute fan-tastic : )
It looks so different painted black, you would think it is a completly new fan! Love the globes too very cool 🙂
Thanks Michelle! I knew this one was gonna be a dramatic difference just with a little spray paint. Black spray paint can make a difference on anything! This is the second light fixture in my house I spray painted black for an instant upgrade…since it is saves us from purchasing a new one for a few years.
Awesome transformation! It is so hard making ceiling fans look chic, but you definitely rocked it.
Wow really cute idea! I’m looking to buy a fixer upper house soon and now I hope that there is a dated fan included! LOL!
Tania
lol I agree! Hope all goes well with your fixer upper home, thanks for your comment!
Brilliant!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing… Will make this my next project!
Thank You! Love inspiring others…hope to see how yours turns out!
What a good idea–love the bulbs. And I love simple! 🙂
Thank you so much Lynn! Simple it is and the those bulbs just make me smile!
So glad I found this. I’m redoing my son’s room (who married and moved out last year!), making it a cozy guest room. Ironically, we have that same hideous fan in that room! Haha! Exactly the same! So I’ll just follow your instruction and I should get the same results. Thanks!
Hi Jeanie! That’s awesome, it was so easy good luck with it!
Wow! What a difference… can hardly believe it’s the same ceiling fan!! Way to go Deb! xo
Thank you so much…amazing what a little paint can do, right?
Hello! Really great before and after. I’ve always wanted to do this but was afraid it would be very time consuming… But I do wonder: two years later, how are you finding the upkeep?I love the black colour but I need to dust my fan fairly often but I’m afraid the mat paint is hard to dust!
Hi Patricia, So the paint looks great 2 years later, but def with mat paint it is much harder to dust. You can get the same look with a different finish so it works better for your up keep.
Looks great! I love the Edison bulbs.
I have to do this! I have been wanting to paint and update ours as well to save money. This is a tremendous difference!
Thank you so much Renee! Honestly, it made such a difference in our family room, and we’ve had it like this for about 2.5 years now…and I’m still not tempted to buy a new one.
I love your idea. I’m getting ready to paint mine today. I’ve ordered the bulbs from amazon, should arrive tomorrow. Super excited!
That’s awesome Lisa, so excited to hear! I sprayed my fan about 3 years ago and it’s still looking great! good luck!
Love love love your blog! Can’t wait to try this out for my 12 year old son’s tween vintage industrial bedroom makeover!
Hope you will stop bymy blog and visit sometime too!
Aww thank you so much Amber! absolutely! I’ll go follow you on fb.
