I have been slowly ticking off my European Heart Summer bucket list. I first shared my Basil gelato, then our garden picnic, and today I can say we accomplished one more of our projects with a DIY clothesline. Its been something I have wanted to add to our backyard for two years now. I just love the idea of hanging out sheets and towels to get that fresh air scent and to have the nostalgic experience of pulling a clothesline filled with dried fresh clothes. Since our mudroom and laundry room has a door that faces the backyard we thought it would be perfect spot to take the clothes from the wash machine and easily pin and hang outside.

It was such an easy DIY that it took us only a few hours last weekend to make. Most of the time was just waiting for the concrete to cure. So far, I have hung out our linens and sheets and nothing smells fresher!

Materials to make an easy DIY clothesline:

• Treated 4×4 (8 ft)
• Treated 2×4
• Clothesline rope
• Two Clothesline pullies
• (2) Screw in hooks
• Turnbuckle (for bringing two ends of rope together)
• This kit sold on Amazon might be an easy 1,2,3 step too

Steps to building a DIY clothesline from house to yard:

First step we dug a hole about a foot down so our clothesline was about 7ft tall. From here you need to add concrete to the hole once pole is straight to and allow to set.

While you wait for your concrete to cure, drill hole into house where you want clothesline to run from. Our clothesline goes slightly on a slant because of the sloping in our yard, but we tried to line it up as straight as possible to the pole. Add your screw hook into hole.

Repeat step on the pole once pole is set and cured. Once concrete is cured you can now hook your clothesline pully into the hook.

Hook rope into pulley wheel and bring ropes together using a turnbuckle. Knot both ends of rope into turnbuckle to secure. Use a fisherman knot to secure!

To add a decorative touch to your pole you can cut 2×4 with 45 degree angle to create a corbel on each side of pole. Hubby cut the top piece of a wood a little short but as I’ve shared before pick your battles and this one I chose to just sit out and embrace the triangle top rather than corbel style look I had intended. Anyhow, it turned out so cute and it’s been truly so wonderful hanging out our laundry so far. If you want you can finish with a stain or paint. I chose to leave mine but I may end up staining it eventually.
